One of Sri Lanka's modern local government councils — from a Town Council of 1947 to an Urban Council since 1999, delivering public services through six main branches and a growing family of dedicated divisions.

The Kattankudy Urban Council is considered one of the modern local government councils in Sri Lanka. It provides many modern public services, digital systems such as the Smart City app, and urban development projects for the community.

The Council’s work is organised into six main branches, from administration and finance through to public health, the environment, and cultural services — each covered in its own detailed page on this site. As the Council has grown, its structure has expanded to eleven divisions, including a dedicated Solid Waste Management Division, a Museum Division, a Model Preschool and a Sewing Class.

Timeline

How it developed

  1. 1947

    Town Council

    Kattankudy's Town Council was established in 1947, operating initially from premises near the main street.

  2. 1981 – 1987

    District Development Council

    After the town council system was abolished, the area was administered as a District Development Council.

  3. 1988 – 1999

    Pradeshiya Sabha

    From 1 January 1988 to 10 June 1999, the area functioned as a Pradeshiya Sabha.

  4. 11 June 1999

    Elevated to Urban Council

    Kattankudy was elevated to an Urban Council — the status it holds today, led by its Chairman and elected council.
