Kattankudy’s slaughterhouse is a Public Health Branch facility with a hard-won history: a site that once drew continuous community opposition was replaced by a purpose-built modern facility on land the Council purchased for the purpose.
The result serves both public health and the community’s needs — hygienic meat processing, proper waste management, and capacity for hundreds of animals at a time under the Halal method.
Timeline
The original slaughterhouse was located near the main road, close to commercial establishments and residential areas. The facility faced continuous public opposition due to unpleasant odours, disturbances caused by crows and stray animals, and the contamination of drinking water sources used by nearby residents.
With the advice of subject experts and the participation of the local community, a cattle and goat slaughterhouse designed to be unlike any other in Sri Lanka was constructed on land purchased by the Urban Council — built using modern methods and operating successfully, with hundreds of animals slaughtered at one time in accordance with the Halal method.
